The process

Pack a laptop in 5 steps

  1. 01 of 05

    Charge the battery to ~40-50%

Lithium batteries ship best at partial charge. Fully charged or fully empty both risk damage.

  2. 02 of 05

    Power down and close

Fully shut down, not sleep. Close the lid fully.

  3. 03 of 05

Wrap in 2 layers of bubble

First layer tight against the laptop; second layer loose for cushioning.

  4. 04 of 05

    Place in padded box

Box should have 2+ in of foam or peanuts all around the wrapped laptop.

  5. 05 of 05

    Seal and label

Fragile sticker; This Side Up is optional since laptops ship fine either orientation.

Carrier notes

Which carrier to use

USPS

Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate fits most laptops. Often cheapest.

UPS

Ground Saver for longer distances.

FedEx

Home Delivery is comparable to UPS.

Insurance + declared value

Protecting the package

Always insure. $100 free with USPS/UPS; add the rest. A $1,500 MacBook insures for about $25 extra on shipping.

Specialty shippers are usually not worth it here.

Parcel carriers ship laptops fine when packed correctly.

FAQ

Common questions

Q01 Do I need to ship via air to avoid cold damage?

No. Modern laptop batteries handle cargo hold temperatures fine. Ground shipping is the norm.

Q02 What about the charger?

Pack it in the same box but separate from the laptop. Cable in a zip-top bag.

Q03 Can I ship internationally?

Yes, but declare the laptop value honestly on customs forms. Understating leads to confiscation.
