How to ship a rug

Rugs ship rolled, never folded. A folded rug ships with permanent creases; a rolled rug arrives flat and ready to use. The main challenge is finding a shipping tube long enough.

Before you pack

The box and materials

Box

Heavy-duty shipping tube or long corrugated box

Tube 2 in wider than rug diameter when rolled

Carpet shops and moving suppliers sell these; also available on Amazon.

Checklist

  • Shipping tube or long box
  • Plastic sheeting (optional, for moisture)
  • Rubber bands or straps
  • Tape
  • Shipping labels

The process

Pack a rug in 5 steps

  1. 01 of 05

    Vacuum the rug thoroughly

Dirt and pet hair get worse during transit; clean before shipping.

  2. 02 of 05

Roll with the pattern facing inward

Pattern inside protects the face; backing outside absorbs handling.

  3. 03 of 05

Secure with 3 straps along the roll

Rubber bands or packing straps at each end and the middle.

  4. 04 of 05

Optional: slide into a plastic sleeve

Prevents moisture if shipping from a humid area.

  5. 05 of 05

Slide into tube or long box and seal

Fill any empty space inside the tube with crumpled paper so the rug does not shift.

Carrier notes

Which carrier to use

USPS

Ground Advantage up to 70 lb and 108 in length. Most 8x10 ft rugs fit.

UPS

Ground for heavier rugs or longer tubes.

FedEx

Home Delivery fine.

Insurance + declared value

Protecting the package

Declare at replacement cost. Fine Persian or Oriental rugs over $1,000 should always insure; synthetic rugs under $300 usually not worth it.

Specialty shippers are usually not worth it here.

For antique or high-value rugs over $5,000, specialty rug shippers offer climate-controlled transit and white-glove delivery.

FAQ

Common questions

Q01 Should I fold the rug to save on shipping?

Never fold. Creases can become permanent on older rugs. Always roll.

Q02 Can I ship a wet rug?

No. Let it dry completely for at least 24 hours before rolling.

Q03 What about rug pads?

Ship separately in a USPS Priority Mail box; they compress and ship easily.
