How to ship a kayak

Most kayaks exceed the length limits of parcel carriers. USPS and FedEx Ground cap out at 108 in; UPS goes to 165 in. A 10 ft (120 in) kayak is UPS-only, and a 14 ft kayak is specialty-shipper-only. Inflatable kayaks are the exception, they ship fine in a standard box.

Typical weight
35-80 lb (most single kayaks), 100+ lb for tandems
Rate band tracked
USPS/UPS Ground
Cheapest option
uShip or a specialty freight carrier; parcel carriers decline most kayaks

Rate guidance

Heavier than our rate tracker goes

At a minimum of 35 lb, this sits above our 20 lb rate band. USPS Ground Advantage still applies (up to 70 lb), and UPS Ground goes to 150 lb. See the carrier notes below for the realistic options and expected cost.

Why no table: we track representative rates at 12 oz, 1 lb, 5 lb, and 20 lb. Anything between 20 and 70 lb would be an extrapolation, not a live quote. Carrier calculators are the honest answer for that range.

Before you pack

The box and materials

Box

Kayak bag or wrap; no retail box

Varies by kayak (10-14 ft length is typical)

Original kayak packaging is rare past 1-2 uses. Most shipments wrap the kayak directly.

Checklist

  • Moving blankets (2-3)
  • Stretch wrap (large industrial roll)
  • Pool noodles or foam pipe insulation for the bow and stern
  • Ratchet straps (3)
  • Packaging labels with clear protective covers
  • A pallet if freight-shipping

The process

Pack a kayak in 6 steps

  1. 01 of 06

Remove all accessories and ship separately

Seat, rod holders, paddle, spray skirt, foot pegs all come off. Ship these in a USPS Priority Mail box. Reduces kayak weight and size and simplifies the hull protection.

  2. 02 of 06

Wrap bow and stern with pool noodles

The bow and stern tips are the most commonly damaged parts during freight handling. Wrap each tip with 2-3 layers of pool noodle, tape on.

  3. 03 of 06

Drape moving blankets over the hull

2-3 overlapping blankets covering the entire deck and hull. Tuck around the cockpit rim.

  4. 04 of 06

Stretch-wrap the blankets to the hull

Several full wraps. Stretch-wrap is what keeps blankets in place during handling. Be thorough, a blanket that loosens in transit exposes the hull.

  5. 05 of 06

Place on pallet if freight shipping

Sized at 96 in long for a 10 ft kayak with 4 in overhang each end. Strap with 2-3 ratchet straps across the kayak to the pallet.

  6. 06 of 06

Attach freight label and bill of lading

Printed freight label goes on the front of the cockpit area. Slip the bill of lading into a clear plastic envelope taped to the kayak.

Carrier notes

Which carrier to use

USPS

Refuses kayaks over 108 in length. Inflatable kayaks only.

UPS

Ground accepts up to 165 in L+G. Most 10-12 ft kayaks fit with surcharges. Oversize 3 surcharge is $120+ on top of base rate, often making UPS more expensive than freight.

FedEx

Similar to UPS. FedEx Ground accepts up to 165 in L+G but applies surcharges aggressively for anything over 96 in length.

Insurance + declared value

Protecting the package

Freight carriers offer separate declared-value coverage. A $1,200 kayak insures for roughly $18-36. Include a photo of the kayak hull and any existing scratches before shipping.

Specialty shippers are worth it here.

uShip bids on kayak routes typically come in at $150-350 cross-country, often half the cost of UPS Ground with all surcharges applied. Handlers also pad and strap more carefully than parcel carriers.

FAQ

Common questions

Q01 Can I ship a kayak via UPS My Choice or a retail store drop-off?

UPS retail stores will decline kayaks over 96 in length. You need a commercial account or a freight pickup to ship anything longer.

Q02 What about just draining and renting a pickup truck instead?

For any shipment over 500 miles, parcel or freight shipping is usually cheaper than a rental truck and fuel. Under 500 miles, renting and driving wins on cost and damage risk.

Q03 How do I handle a two-person tandem kayak?

Tandems are 14-16 ft and 80+ lb. All three parcel carriers will refuse them. Freight is mandatory. uShip or a moving company are your only options.
