How to ship fragile items

Glass, ceramic, art, and other fragile shipments all follow the same rule: 2-inch rule plus corner protection. If an item cannot move 2 inches in any direction inside the box, it usually survives.

Before you pack

The box and materials

Box

Corrugated box with 2+ in padding on all sides

Inside dimensions must be 4 in bigger than the item on each axis

Double-boxing is the gold standard for high-value fragile shipments.

Checklist

  • Inner box (snug)
  • Outer box (4+ in bigger)
  • Bubble wrap (large bubble)
  • Packing peanuts
  • Foam sheet or foam corner protectors
  • Fragile tape and labels

The process

Pack fragile items in 5 steps

  1. 01 of 05

    Wrap the item in bubble

Large-bubble wrap, 2+ layers. Small bubble does not absorb impact.

  2. 02 of 05

    Place in inner box

Snug fit with 1 in of peanuts all around.

  3. 03 of 05

Place inner box in outer box

4+ in of peanuts all around the inner box. This is the crush zone.

  4. 04 of 05

    Add corner protectors

Foam or cardboard on all four corners of the outer box.

  5. 05 of 05

    Fragile labels on every face

Multiple labels; handlers cannot see the box from every angle during handling.

Carrier notes

Which carrier to use

Ground; UPS Store locations offer fragile specialty handling for an extra fee.

FedEx

Insurance + declared value

Protecting the package

Always insure. Fragile items are the #1 claim category; declare full replacement value.

Specialty shippers are usually not worth it here.

Parcel carriers handle fragile items fine with proper packing. Specialty shippers only for items over $2,000.

FAQ

Common questions

Q01 Does the Fragile label actually help?

Marginally. It suggests careful handling but does not guarantee it. The packing job matters far more than the label.

Q02 Should I use peanuts or air pillows?

Peanuts for heavier items; air pillows for lighter. Neither is best for everything.

Q03 What about styrofoam molded inserts?

Best option for high-volume shipments of the same item. Custom foam molds offer near-perfect protection.
