How to ship a bookshelf
Most bookshelves ship as flat-packed components (IKEA-style) or fully assembled. Flat-packed is vastly easier and ~40% cheaper.
- Typical weight
- Flat-packed: 40-70 lb, Pre-assembled: 60-120 lb
- Rate band tracked
- USPS/UPS Ground
- Cheapest option
- USPS Ground Advantage if flat-packed and under 70 lb, otherwise freight
Rate guidance
Heavier than our rate tracker goes
At a minimum of 40 lb, this sits above our 20 lb rate band. USPS Ground Advantage still applies (up to 70 lb), and UPS Ground goes to 150 lb. See the carrier notes below for the realistic options and expected cost.
Why no table: we track representative rates at 12 oz, 1 lb, 5 lb, and 20 lb. Anything between 20 and 70 lb would be an extrapolation, not a live quote. Carrier calculators are the honest answer for that range.
Before you pack

The process
Pack a bookshelf in 4 steps
01 of 04
Disassemble if not already flat-packed
Unscrew each shelf from the uprights. Bag all hardware with a label indicating which shelf it came from.
02 of 04
Wrap each shelf
Bubble wrap every shelf individually; stack with cardboard between.
03 of 04
Protect the uprights
Foam along the full length of each upright. These are the most likely pieces to crack.
04 of 04
Box and tape
Everything into one long box. Seal with tape along every seam.
Carrier notes
Which carrier to use

UPS
Ground accepts 150 lb. Oversize surcharges apply over 96 in length.
FedEx
Similar to UPS.
Insurance + declared value
Protecting the package
Usually not worth it for bookshelves under $500. Over $500, declare value.
Specialty shippers are usually not worth it here.
Flat-packed bookshelves ship fine via parcel. Assembled bookshelves over 100 lb benefit from uShip.
FAQ
Common questions
Q01 Do I need the original hardware?
Yes. Bag it inside the main box with a label.
Q02 What if the shelves are already assembled?
Disassemble if possible. Shipping assembled adds 30-50% to cost and damage risk.
Q03 Can I ship the books with the bookshelf?
Never. Books ship separately in Media Mail; they will crack the bookshelf.
